Frequently Asked Questions About Adult Ballet
-
SKM Adult Ballet is a welcoming RAD Ballet School for adult students who want to learn, return to, or continue ballet in a supportive and structured environment. Classes focus on technique, posture, musicality, confidence, discipline, creativity and, most importantly, enjoyment of movement.
Our aim is to create a positive learning environment where adult learners feel encouraged, respected and able to progress at their own pace. Whether you are completely new to ballet or returning after time away, SKM Adult Ballet supports steady improvement through clear instruction, thoughtful practice and individual care.

Absolutely! Our Beginners Classes are suitable for absolute beginners – not a single day of dance experience is necessary.
Starting ballet as an adult can feel daunting, but don't let fear of the unknown put you off. Try one class and you may surprise yourself with how much you enjoy it!
I have been teaching adult ballet for years and I promise you will be in a safe, supportive environment where you can learn, have fun and progress at your own pace.
-
Not at all! Our Beginners Classes are designed specifically for adults who are new to ballet.
You don't need to be flexible, fit or have any previous dance experience. You simply need to come along, be willing to learn and enjoy the process.
If you have danced before but haven't done ballet for many years, you're welcome too. We can help you find the right class for your current level.
-
Absolutely! There are many adult dancers in this position.
In fact, I stopped dancing for many years while I pursued another career and had my three children, so I know first-hand what it is like to return to ballet as an adult.
Because of this, I offer classes at different levels. Over the years, my adult students have taken RAD Ballet Exams and performed to sold-out audiences.
Our classes are fun, but they can be as challenging as you want them to be. We follow the RAD Syllabus and can work towards Grade or Vocational exams together.
-
Definitely not!
There is no age limit for learning ballet. Adult ballet is for anyone who wants to learn, improve their technique, challenge themselves or simply enjoy moving to music.
You don't have to become a professional dancer – you can simply enjoy the benefits of ballet at whatever stage of life you're at.
-
Don't worry! You don't need to be flexible to start ballet.
Flexibility is something that can improve gradually through regular, appropriate stretching and movement. We work on flexibility alongside strength, balance, posture and technique.
Everyone starts from a different place, so there is no need to compare yourself to anyone else.
-
Your first class will introduce you to the fundamentals of ballet in a relaxed and supportive environment.
You'll learn some basic ballet positions and movements, work on posture and technique, and take part in simple exercises at the barre and in the centre.
Don't worry if you don't remember everything straight away – nobody does! Ballet takes practice, and you'll gradually become more familiar with the terminology and exercises as you attend.
-
Most adult ballet dancers start in leggings, a T-shirt and socks. As long as your hair is tied back and you feel comfortable, that's all that matters!
However... very quickly I see the dance gear creeping in! The ballet shoes first, then the beautiful ballet skirts. And then leotards and legwarmers find their way onto Christmas lists!
Dance gear is fab – and as addictive as ballet itself!
-
No! You don't need to buy a whole new ballet wardrobe before you start.
For your first class, comfortable clothing and socks are absolutely fine. Once you've decided that ballet is for you, I'll be happy to advise you on what ballet shoes and other dancewear you might like.
-
Yes. SKM Adult Ballet offers classes for different levels of adult dancers, from absolute beginners through to students with previous ballet experience.
The aim is to make sure you are learning at an appropriate level, while still being challenged and able to progress.
If you're unsure which class is right for you, just get in touch and I can help you choose.
-
Yes! Adult students can work towards RAD Ballet Exams, including Grade and Vocational examinations.
Exams are completely optional, and there is no pressure to take them. For students who want a goal to work towards, however, they can be a fantastic way to challenge yourself, measure your progress and celebrate your achievements.
